ABOUT

Our newest location in Downey CA is a unique facility offering center-based therapy and classes as opposed to the more traditional home-based therapy approach. The Downey Center for Autism is a resource for all families with children on the autism spectrum, offering services for both the children on the spectrum, their siblings, and parents. The goal of our center-based approach is to provide an environment for children on the spectrum to learn and build social skills and to offer training and counseling for parents and siblings.

Early Intervention

We offer 6 hour classes for children 1 year old or older, Monday – Friday. The sooner a child on the spectrum receives ABA treatment, the better chance they will have for success later in life.

Social Skills Classes

Working one-on-one with a licensed behavioral analyst, each child is evaluated for entry-level skills. Following the evaluation, we use best practices and evidence-based interventions for learners who exhibit social skills problems and other challenging behaviors. More specifically, we “match” our interventions to the strengths of a learner and the most critical behavior excesses or skill deficits exhibited by a learner. We believe that achievement in the domain of social interaction greatly improves the quality of life for a learner and we place a premium on screening, assessment, and individually tailored interventions.

Parent Training

Providing effective treatment to families of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders requires the establishment of a partnership between treatment staff and parents. This partnership involves many elements, including effective communication, mutual respect, clear boundaries, and clearly defined roles. Although every treatment team member plays a role on the team, parents play the key role. They are the most important members of their child’s treatment team. While treatment staff will come and go, parents will remain the central axis of any treatment team.

Family Support Groups

Having a child on the spectrum can create a unique dynamic between parents, children, and their siblings. In our licensed support groups we invite families to join together and share their experiences with each other while receiving feedback and training from our licensed therapists.

Benefits of Center-Based Services

A center-based approach can be used in conjunction with home-based therapy or on its own. A customized plan will be developed for your child once you visit our office and meet with our licensed team. Some benefits of including a center-based approach include:

  • It's a great resource for children in pre-kindergarten or younger. Early intervention can make a huge difference in the life of a child.
  • Children have the opportunity to learn social skills through interaction with their peers. Home-based therapy is typically 1:1, whereas our center has 3 social group sessions throughout the day based on age and social abilities.
  • Trained staff are always available - a session will never be cancelled if a staff member calls out sick. Multiple staff are always available to guarantee consistent services are available for your child.
  • Many resources like toys, assessments, clinicians, parent training, group therapy, and community connections are all available at this location.
  • Behavior management and the ability to manage more severe behavioral problems than in the home.
  • Flexible day schedules are available for working parents.
